Building a system with no pause button — @paritytech's story of grit & grace.
As @gavofyork recalls: “We never really had an office culture. From the embers of ETH Dev, we were global from day one.”
From a tiny house on the North Sea coast where 3 people wrote the first Rust client,
to sunny island retreats and spontaneous BarCamps,
Parity has always been held together by faith and code.
In 2020, Polkadot launched with no countdown, no ceremony.
Just one line: “Let’s launch today.”
Pure engineer’s romance — direct, fearless, unstoppable.
From Kusama key mismatches to lost states during migrations,
they fixed everything on a chain that couldn’t stop running.
By 2022, Gavin stepped down as CEO to focus on JAM, Agile Coretime & OpenGov — turning decentralization from theory into reality.
“Here, everything is public — for better or worse, that’s the price of transparency.”
Looking back, the team agrees:
their greatest pride wasn’t in technical breakthroughs,
but in the courage to keep going —
through fevers, lockdowns, and chaos.

10 years ago, an idea about a decentralized future quietly took root in London.
Back then, @ethereum had just launched, and $ETH was under $1. @gavofyork and his peers asked: If this is where the dream ends, what comes next?
They wrote a new Ethereum client in Rust — founding Ethcore, later known as @paritytech.
On a summer night in San Francisco, they conceived the heterogeneous sharded chain — the first spark of @Polkadot.
They built everything atop Wasm, creating Substrate, a framework that lets anyone build their own blockchain.
And soon after, they launched @kusamanetwork, the wild “canary network,” with one timeless motto: “Expect Chaos & No Promises.”
From London meetings to Berlin beers, to a secret tattoo club on Kusama — this is a story of idealism and engineering, chaos and order, art and code.
A decade later, Parity and Polkadot haven’t just built a network, they’ve built a living experiment in decentralization.
